oh the places you'll go...

We pulled Kaleb out of his daycare at Pulaski Heights. I LOVED his first caregiver--even bought her an easter gift, she's so sweet--but since being moved to the 6-12 month room I've been having issues with the new worker; it was like pulling teeth trying to find out about his day and I'm not one of those annoying mothers. Well, I admit I am that mom in subtle ways; I am the mom who printed out the recall list for 2007 since the exersaucer in kaleb's class was on it even though it turned out it was in the clear since it was the newer post-recall version. I am the mom who stops by to check on him occasionally on my lunch breaks (maybe once a week if I'm in the area dining at Pei Wei) and I am the mother who pulls the gym mat on the carpeted half of the room and occasionally cleans the mat with baby wipes but I wouldn't call that annoying. And I don't need to know everything about kaleb's day, I would just like her to take the initiative to tell me something! --did he enjoy his new baby food? did he pull his doctor prescribed shoes off early in the day or later? why didn't he finish his second bottle? Rather then re-explain the incident that caused us to pull him out I'll just paste the email I sent to Lauren:

The kicker was when I visited kaleb at lunch monday and another baby fell backwards and hit his head really hard on the linoleum--you remember me saying I wasn't happy about the small area mat with the climbing ring in the middle since the padding area around the ring is not sufficiently large enough for cushioning babies falls? well, wasn't worried about kaleb yet since he plays on his tummy and can't sit up unless someone sits him up so I'm sure he's not climbing on it...but william was just sitting on the edge of the mat and fell backwards and hit his head so hard it took me a while to find my words to blurt out "how often does this happen?" mind you I waited several minutes for william to stop screaming...she scooped him up and patted him a bit and she actually sat him back down right on the edge of the mat still screaming where he could again fall back and hit his head. She then realized she should probably pick him up again since he was still screaming. Mind you, he screamed the entire time I was there. She commented to me unsympathetically "william needs to calm down...this is the second time he's hit his head." The second time?! And an 8 month old needs to calm down?!! No, she needs to safeguard their bodies as much as possible as they explore. Common sense would tell one to place him in the MIDDLE of the mat. I've also told her to place kaleb in the middle of the ring so if he falls he hits padding but I've checked on him twice and he was outside the ring both times. She also always pulls the mat on the hard floor when I've repeatedly asked her to place it on the carpet. I asked her if kaleb had fallen before and she responded: "he's taken a few tumbles." If hitting one's head on a hard floor is "taking a tumble" to her and there has never been an incident report filed she is obviously not looking out for his physical well being. I'm so frustrated Lauren! I'm talking to the director today.

Accidents happen but come on! If she was that apathetic in front of me...so we pulled him out on Monday of last week and had him in a new daycare by Wednesday, which is down the road from Derek's work and is AWESOME so far! They had one spot available and Kaleb has now filled the quota! Luckily* Derek had had his tooth pulled that Monday, had taken pain meds on an empty stomach, and consequently passed out on Tuesday, smashing his 200+ pound body into the toilet and completely uprooting it in the process. This gave us time; I got to stay home to care for him on Tuesday and we got to tour the new daycare before Kaleb's first day after Derek got over the nausea and dizziness=) The entire room is carpeted and they place babies in boppies when on the floor and they also place them on an alphabet mat in the middle of the room that was given to them courtesy of Derek and myself. The director took 40 minutes touring the facility with me and all the workers really made an effort to make me feel those "warm fuzzies." A girl I know from church is one of the workers. I can finally relax at work and check on him on video anytime I like! Derek called me mid-day when he stopped by to see Kaleb on his way back from the job site so I could check him out on video. There are my two boys! It's so cute because now Derek will call me at work to tell me to pull up the video so check out the happenings. One particular time there were a bunch of babies all on the mat playing together and you could see an exchange between kaleb and another baby: toy stealing going back and forth! He was stealing from another girl just like he does to Riley! We'll need to work on that soon!
