- during bath time which he LOVES LOVES LOVES he peed in his "big boy" ducky tub and put his hand in his urine stream and in intense concentration moved it further from his body then closer while maintaining steadfast fixation on that stream. He suddenly placed one finger right on the exit orifice and plugged it up! Needless to say, I was rolling!
- he LOVES LOVES LOVES watching dancing/singing. So You Think You Can Dance was a favorite for Kaleb. Ordinarily, he'd rather crawl, jump, pivot, bounce--ANYTHING to feed his rambunctious nature-- rather than watch television. But as soon as he hears music in conjunction with dancing/singing he'll drop everything and just stare through to the end. As soon as it ends, though, he picks up playing right where he left off. High School Musical is now a sure save if I'm trying to get him to stay still while I put his diaper on. His body will go limp and relaxed during a performance and this is about the ONLY time he is limp and relaxed!!! I was looking at my boy in knowing anticipation as he was wildly crawling over my leg trying to get off the couch. The music started. Kaleb's rigid muscles relaxed. What was once a taut arm lay heavy and motionless on my leg and his head now rested on my knee. He watched contentedly as they danced. As soon as it was finished he perked up and began clapping!!! I LOVE it! He's learning to clap at appropriate times and even clapped at the end of John McCain's speech along with the audience! When did our little baby become such a little boy? It's happening right before our eyes but it seems like only yesterday...
- Derek quickly ran to the laundry room while kaleb was playing in the nursery and when he returned he found Kaleb standing up in the bathroom holding onto the toilet, banging his hands on the germ-infested porcelain! What a boy!
- he starts smacking his lips together in excitement for his baby food. He especially loved the peach puffs and cherry puffs but we've had a few scary swallowing moments when he didn't swirl it round his mouth to break it down and it stuck at the very back of his tongue causing him to gag a little. He did LOVE picking up the puffs himself and putting them in his mouth and it was entertainment for us when he missed his mouth by a hair and the puff was stuck to his outer lip. He would open and close his mouth awaiting the yummy puff taste wondering where that darn puff went! We're letting him get more adept at swallowing his #3 foods before giving him puffs again. Another scary incident: he was given a cheerio at the church nursery Sunday and as soon as I picked him up after service he started choking. His face turned beet red. I froze and another mother grabbed him and started the heimlich maneuver. He vomited on the floor and all was well. Let me tell you God hears my constant prayers of protection for Kaleb. For some reason--probably partly because we were having an outing with the girls that afternoon and I knew I wasn't going to get much time with Kaleb but mostly because God protects--I hardly waited for the 'Amen' and made a beeline for the nursery to pick up Kaleb as soon as possible. Coincidence? Uh, I ALWAYS chat a bit before picking him up to allow the aisles to clear but had decided at the beginning of this service on this particular day to grab him asap. I even ran into another mother as I was jogging in the hallway. The Lord speaketh and he speaketh clearly! Thankfully, I got there to be with him although I didn't do much to help =)) It's a little disheartening to realize my physical manifestations of the fight or flight response. After several moments of stupefied, frozen horror...I fight! I was so thankful there was another mother there who acted a little quicker!
- Kaleb's crib was FINALLY moved into his own room at about 8 1/2 months. It took everything in me not to sleep in his room that first night! Hearing his breathing on a monitor just isn't the same!
"Dada" STILL completely dominates his babble fests. Although I beg and beg him tirelessly to say "mama" my begging still only returns a super-enthusiastic smiley-faced "DADA." But he has started falling asleep on me again!!! YAY YAY DOUBLE-YAY!!! When we're home I normally lay him down in his crib since he is accustomed to that although every once in a heavenly while he will curl up on me, grab onto my shirt and fall asleep. He also will lay his head on my shoulder and pass out as well. He did this all the time up until he was three months or so then went through a phase where he would fight sleep so badly holding him would NOT help. I LOVE this "baby drop" as Jenn calls it!!! He also falls asleep on Derek which consigns Derek to perfect contentment on the couch and no longer is he given to jealously cry "kaleb falls asleep on you because of your 'pillows'."=))
Last weekend we had the usual Burns Family dinner which was AWESOME as usual! Cathy made Chicken Cordon Bleu, we played games and I almost got beat out at Checkers by a little girl named Izzy. Not really, but she pulled out all the tricks and cheated as much as she could in the attempt! This past weekend was Kaleb's first baseball game, The Travelers vs. The Naturals and we enjoyed it in style in the company suite. Derek got to catch the Razorbacks last minute and they OF COURSE pulled it out again in the end! We had a girls dinner Saturday night and movie/lunch sunday. Derek, Kaleb, and I enjoyed the rest of our Sunday at Lake Willastein feeding the ducks in front of the "Do Not Feed the Waterfowl" sign, holding kaleb and running in the grass, and pushing kaleb on the swings. There was, of course, one little girl who was in love with kaleb--as a playmate, not romantically as she thought 'he' was a 'she' and followed him around and commented to us "she has such BIG ears." =) It was pretty much a perfect Sunday.
slow day at work and a few coworkers informed me of this vid we have since replayed 5 times...if this doesn't make your Friday simply AWESOME there's not much hope for you. Makes me want to pump my arms and dance on my chair =)) Now that's good stuff!! It has the same effect Mama Mia has!
